Can a saree really cost more than a Mercedes car and this is not a film or ramp thing, but the truth of real life. Especially when it comes to a precious saree woven by hand with each thread. Many news and videos are going viral on the internet about the ‘world’s most expensive saree’, but many of them are wrong, some have been exaggerated and some old truths have been forgotten.
You might have read or heard on social media that Nita Ambani wore a saree worth Rs 40 crore. This claim is completely wrong. Actually this rumor started from an old and wrong news, where it was said that she wore a saree worth Rs 40 lakh, at some places it was written as Rs 40 crore, which was a typo or a lie. There is no official confirmation of this, no photo evidence, nor any company or designer has confirmed it. Many blogs, Instagram reels and WhatsApp forwards are spreading this as true, but it is just a rumour. Nita Ambani did not wear the world’s most expensive saree ‘Marriage Pattu’.
This honor goes to the Kanchipuram silk saree named Vivaah Pattu, which was made by Chennai Silks Company. It has got the status of the world’s most expensive silk saree in the Guinness World Records. It was sold on January 5, 2008 for Rs 39,31,627 (approximately Rs 39.32 lakh). At that time this price was equal to about 1 lakh US dollars. Even in today’s terms, this amount is huge. The price of a luxury Mercedes car (like the base model of Mercedes E-Class or S-Class) can be less or equal to this.
This saree is not expensive just because of gold and diamonds. Its real magic is the combination of art, hard work and Indian culture. 11 famous paintings of Raja Ravi Varma have been woven on the pallu, especially the painting in the middle of ‘Galaxy of Musicians’, which is also called ‘Galaxy of Musicians’. In this, women from different states of India are shown. Each in their traditional clothes, playing different instruments. As:
These women are not princesses or goddesses but common women of India, who show the diversity of music and culture of the entire country. Marathi, Bengali, Tamil, Punjabi all together. More than wearing a saree, it is a living cultural map, which is woven in silk threads.

Was it made just for show?
No! Despite weighing 8 kg and being adorned with Navaratnas, it can be worn like a common bride. The paintings on the pallu are woven so finely that the fabric does not feel hard or heavy but looks comfortable and beautiful. Even today it is maintained and repaired so that the color and art remain intact.
